19:00 - Krzysztof Lis: What I Learned from NavySEALs About Running an Engineering Team

What can engineering managers and tech leads learn from Navy SEALs? Surprisingly—a lot. In this talk, I share the powerful lessons I learned from applying Navy SEALs tactics to leading a remote engineering team through our startup’s most critical, high-stakes project. When we hit roadblocks, missed deadlines, or saw team morale dip, I stopped looking at individual contributors—and started looking in the mirror. You’ll hear how I embraced ownership, why decentralizing command helped my team execute faster, and how applying “prioritize and execute” saved us from spiraling in chaos when dealing with customer facing incidents. This isn’t about being militant—it’s about clarity, responsibility, and leadership under pressure. Whether you’re new to engineering management or leading at scale, this talk will give you tactical, real-world frameworks to level up your leadership—and help your team thrive in the face of uncertainty.

Bio: Krzysztof Lis is Engineering Manager at Bobsled, where he rose from Principal Engineer. Earlier he built distributed systems at Goldman Sachs and, as Senior Engineer at Amazon, led IMDb’s migration from a monolithic REST API to a federated GraphQL platform running on AWS Lambda. He also designed multilingual Elasticsearch search and ML pipelines that auto-tag 200 M+ IMDb images. Author of AWS’s three-part “Building Federated GraphQL on Lambda” series, Krzysztof pairs deep architecture chops with a knack for energizing devs through tech talks and workshops.
